Scottish Housing Day 2024

Homes for Life

The importance of housing, in supporting people throughout life as their needs and priorities change, is the focus for this year’s Scottish Housing Day, which takes place on Wednesday 18 September.

Scottish Housing Day is an annual event which aims to raise awareness of the challenges and successes in Scotland’s housing sector, as well as encouraging the sector and members of the public to get involved by organising events, Q&A sessions, and sharing stories and blogs via social media.

Commenting on the day, CIH Scotland’s policy and practice manager and chair of the Scottish Housing Day working group Ashley Campbell said:

“Our population is ageing faster in Scotland than in the rest of the UK, and as people grow older their housing needs can change. This might require some simple adaptations to make homes more accessible, technology to support day to day activities, or planning to move to a more suitable home that’s closer to family or local amenities, or easier to manage.

“We know that many people don’t think about their housing needs or plan for the future, and that it may not always be easy to find the right information and advice about housing or other support that’s available. This year, for Scottish Housing Day, we want to encourage people to think about housing for people in later life as we facilitate a nationwide discussion on housing needs and how we can plan for the future – as individuals, communities, housing organisations and policy makers.”

Long standing Langstane Housing Association Tenant

Kevin Hutchens

As part of our celebration for Scottish Housing Day 2024, we at Langstane Housing Association are proud to honour our long-standing tenant, Kevin Hutchens. Having moved into his home in Stonehaven in December 1993, just in time for Christmas, Kevin views his tenancy as a true gift from God.

After years living in a variety of temporary homes, securing a Scottish Secure Tenancy brought Kevin a sense of stability and community in the beautiful town he now calls home. Over the past 30 years, he has witnessed both positive developments and challenges in Stonehaven, yet his love for the area's friendliness, scenic beauty, and vibrant community spirit remains unwavering.

Kevin has actively participated with Langstane, serving on the board for 24 years and advocating for tenant involvement and accountability. His journey reflects a deep commitment to his faith, community, and the values of tenant representation.

We celebrate Kevin not just as a tenant, but as a cherished member of our Langstane family who exemplifies the spirit of community and connection.
